Cascade funding explained: how to assess an open call
Cascade funding is Financial Support to Third Parties: an EU-funded project uses an allocated budget to support other recipients through calls. The specific organiser's documents determine who can apply and what can be funded. There is no single universal deadline or grant amount.
Who runs a cascade funding call?
Instead of applying as a beneficiary of the original EU project, you apply to a downstream opportunity issued by that project. The Commission's FSTP guidance describes this structure. Follow the application channel named in the call; a listing in a discovery catalogue is not the application itself.
What should you check first?
Our screening checklist separates hard eligibility requirements from information that merely sounds relevant:
- Eligible countries, organisation types and any company-size criteria.
- Required technology, sector, maturity and use case.
- Whether applications are individual or require partners.
- Maximum support per recipient, eligible activities and any own contribution.
- Opening and closing timestamps, timezone and the official submission portal.
- Project deliverables, reporting obligations, intellectual-property terms and payment conditions.
Is cascade funding always easier to win?
Do not equate a shorter form with an easy award. Our recommendation is to compare the selection criteria against your available evidence. A tightly specified pilot can be a strong match for one company and completely unsuitable for another. Avoid assuming that past results, programme labels or grant size predict your chance of success.
How to handle unclear or conflicting deadlines
Use the latest official call documents and any published amendments. Record the deadline timezone. If a catalogue and the organiser disagree, check with the organiser and keep the clarification. An unknown deadline should remain unverified; it is not evidence that applications are currently open.
Build a shortlist you can act on
For each candidate, write three short notes: why the project fits, what evidence is missing and the next action. Allocate preparation time only after checking the mandatory conditions. Our catalogue can help discover opportunities, but coverage and update times vary. Always open the official source before deciding to apply.
